What you can do with it
- See what a country listens to today and how songs moved since yesterday.
- Play a 30-second preview of any song, or open it in your music app.
- Find a song's tempo and key for dancing, running, DJ mixes or learning it on an instrument.
- Browse by tempo or key: every song at 120 BPM, or every song in A minor.
How the tempo, key and energy are measured
Each song's numbers come from listening to its preview, not from a database. The analysis separates the drums from the harmony first, because the two answer different questions.
Tempo (BPM)
The drum part is scanned for note onsets, and a beat tracker finds the steady pulse that best explains them. The result is rounded to a whole number. Like every automatic method it can sometimes land on half or double the felt tempo: a 70 BPM ballad and a 140 BPM track can share the same pulse.
Key
The harmonic part is turned into a chroma profile, which shows how much of each of the twelve notes is sounding, and compared with the Krumhansl key profiles from music psychology research. The best match gives the key, for example A minor.
Camelot code
DJs use the Camelot wheel to find songs that mix well: codes with the same number, or one step apart, are harmonically compatible. A minor is 8A, so it blends with 8B, 7A and 9A.
Energy
Energy combines loudness, how busy the drums are, how bright the sound is and how much it changes. It is a guide to how intense a song feels, from calm (low) to driving (high).
Where the charts come from
The chart positions are collected every day from the public top-song lists of Spotify, Apple Music and Deezer. Previews are the official 30-second clips found through Apple's iTunes Search API, and links lead to the services themselves; mdworks is not affiliated with any of them.
Questions
Why is a song's BPM half or double what I expected?
Automatic tempo detection follows the strongest pulse in the drums. In songs with half-time drums it can report half or double the tempo you feel. Both describe the same rhythm.
Can I use the key to sing or play along?
Yes, as a starting point. The key is measured from a 30-second preview, so songs that change key later may differ.
How often are the charts updated?
Once a day. Songs new to the charts get their tempo, key and energy measured the same day.
